As a citizen of the world, I want to see the Olympic Games return to the principles of brotherhood.
I do not intend to boycott these 2008 Games: I believe the world’s top athletes have earned the right to be there, and the Chinese people should also be able to enjoy hosting this important event.
That’s why I’m making this declaration:
Members of the IOC, I don’t buy your decision to award the 2008 Olympic Games to a country like China, a country that claims to be open for business but has no regard for basic democratic freedoms. I consider your decision to be in contradiction with the fundamental principles of Olympism.
Members of the IOC, I don’t buy your silence and that of your sponsors, when frankness and honesty on your part might have given a place of honor to human dignity, in the true spirit of the Movement you claim to support.
Members of the IOC, I don’t buy your concept of the Games, which is drifting further and further away from the Olympic Ideal. As a representative of the world’s population, I demand that our Games be returned to the universal values on which they were founded.
Your support can truly make a difference.
In September, we will contact the leaders of the International Olympic Committee to show them how many individuals have expressed their support. We want to demonstrate just how many people in the world hold dear the values that they, the IOC, are entrusted to protect.
